Music: A Changing Industry

A new trend has started, one that has replaced the monotonic .fm radio static associated with car stereos and Walkmans with quality and artistic music that we can enjoy everywhere we go. The culture of the world wide web has had a profound effect on the way people are now listening to music, no longer are you forced to hit an Amoeba Record Store for 16 hours to find funky new beats to moonwalk to, with a simple stroke of the keyboard you are able to filter through millions of pages of aspiring artists. Can You Feel It I Sublime With Rome Ft. Wiz Khalifa

There’s nothing better than a perfect combination of past and present. Kanye makes and album with his “Big Brother,” but that’s not the best combo I’ve heard in the past two days.

Although they have changed their name, Sublime With Rome(Who is playing in California Aug. 19-23) is coming out with some classics. Featuring the Eric the bassist and Bud the drummer from the legendary Sublime, Rome has been looking to play with guys similar to them since he started his music career. He now has his chance and he’s taking full advantage of it.

Their new album “Yours Truly” has a similar Sublime album cover artwork and reggae/punk sound. They even have an experimental seven minute dubstep song called “Safe and Sound” that would even make dearly departed former singer Bradley proud. The biggest highlight is a song called “Can You Feel It” with an unexpected guest star.

Wiz Khalifa bridges the old Sublime with the new realm of music. The voice heard everywhere these days raps about what he knows best: rollin fatties and keeping his head in the clouds. He starts slow with the reggae beat then raps his way to the finish with a quick rhymes and sick flows.

The rest of the album sounds a little more poppy and more love songs than we’re used to seeing with the Sublime name, but Rome has said he is trying to distance himself from being Brad and he stands out with this album. I don’t know why it doesn’t have more radio plays and more popularity. Although it’s not classic Sublime, I can’t wait to go to a concert and vibe to some classics; old and new.

Throne Is Burning | Jay-Z & Kanye West

After months upon months of hype, the often proclaimed kings of the hip hop community have finally delivered their highly anticipated Watch The Throne LP. Thus far the album has received phenomenal critical acclaim, incorporating chest-pounding beats and a mixture of sounds ranging from dubstep to rhythm & blues. Kanye West and Jay-Z made a promise to fans across the country to develop a masterwork collaboration album, and they brought forth just that. After one listening cycle of this album listeners will quickly forget the steeper iTunes cost of $14.99 for the LP, and immediately begin seeking the nearest blaster to project these beats at elevated volumes. Enjoy my current personal favorite from this album, featuring British pop artist, Mr. Hudson. Listen UP. RABBLE on.

The dynamic duo released the first single called “H.A.M” (HardAsMutherf*cka) in early January but later claimed that the track didn’t quit fit on the album so now it will be featured as a bonus track. It still makes for a great show opener for Kanye’s latest tour, and speaking of tours “The Throne” tour kicks of on the 22nd of September. Tour Dates have just been released and if your going to be around the Los Angeles area on October 19th or 20th you might want to check them at the Staples Center.

A Tribute To A King | Kanye West | Jay Z

Otis Redding was more than a soul singer, he was the King of Soul. His influence was widespread, ranging from The Doors tribute “Runnin’ Blue” to De La Soul’s “Eye Know.” His songs have found their rightful place among the top written and recorded songs of all time on a variety of well-regarded periodicals and institutions. It is no wonder then that Kanye West and Jay-Z chose a sample from a 1966 version of “Try a Little Tenderness” [VIDEO] for their recent single “Otis.” The love affair between pop music culture and the King of Soul remains. The track is set to be included on the highly anticipated collaboration Watch The Thone LP [PREORDER NOW], a project the two emcees are currently recording and touching up in the South of France. The album is rumored to be dropping on August 1, almost a year after the project was revealed by Kanye. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jay-Z spoke on the timely team approach taken for the LP and stated “If we were gonna do it, we were gonna do it together. No mailing it in.” The album features guest appearances by recording artists Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, and Mr Hudson. The dedication that the duo has given to the album has not gone unnoticed, as the paparazzi has not been able to snap a shot of Yeezy in recent weeks. Or maybe… “They ain’t seen me ’cause I pulled up in my other Benz. Last week I was in my other-other Benz.” Makes sense. Listen UP. RABBLE on.

New Consequence feat. Kid Cudi (Produced by Kanye West) “On My Own” + More Kanye

Here’s a new track from Jamaican, Queens native Consequence, hes been in the game for over ten years and I believe his flow deserves more recognition then he gets.In 2005 he signed with Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music label and came out with his debut album Don’t Quit Your Day Job. “In May 2011, Consequence confirmed that he had dissolved his partnership with Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music alleging he was not receiving credit for his work and that his sophomore release had been delayed due to a lack of progress from alleged producers West and his cousin Q-Tip. Consequence confirmed he had started his own label, Band Camp Records.” This time around he’s working with a new Kid Cudi who since April of 2011 has decided to quite his notorious marijuana habit. After making songs like Marijuana, Dat Tree, and I Be High he has become an icon for weed smokers around the globe, but after fighting a serious coke addiction he says that he must focus on being a good father to his daughter. Mad props for a celebrity famous for smoking to realized that his life needed a drastic change.  The song “On My Own” is produced by the musical mastermind Kanye West.
