Soulstep | Alex Clare

On top of being the ex-boyfriend of Amy Winehouse, former chef, and turning the heads of industry greats like Beyonce and Adele, Londoner Alex Clare is taking the online music world by storm. Little over a year ago Clare headed to New Orleans with Diplo and Switch to produce the unique blend of pop/soul/electronic/dubstep that is found on his debut album The Lateness of the Hour. Released in July, the album has just recently gained momentum with singles “Up All Night” and “Too Close” earning their way to the top of the music blog charts. Clare is somewhat of an anomaly in the electronic world, using his talents to perform guitar, drums, keyboard, harmonica, and even a ukelele on his album. Then he goes on to add the final touch with deep dubstep bass that adds to the soulfulness of his vocals. Essentially Alex has created an offspring genre that might be considered soulstep. His music may not be for everyone, but it is certainly worthy of a listen by everyone. Listen UP. RABBLE on.

It’s In The Title | Zeds Dead

When a dj collaboration has had a featured album in GQ magazine, remixes of original work by tv commercial electropop favorite Dragonette, and several of tracks included included in sets by such artists as Rusko, Diplo and Bassnectar, all in the last year, then it is quite ironic to hear a name like Zeds Dead, because this Ontario-based duo is anything but dead. Comprised of artists DC and Hooks, the duo has found itself at the top of the music blog charts, finding its way to numero uno on The Hype Machine. Zeds Dead incorporates electronic beats with a dubstep drop, and somewhat of a hip-hop and funk groove to give it a unique sound that strays from the overly produced heavy hitting dubstep that is so common across the continents this past year. This jam is the perfect start to your long weekend. Throw it on the blaster during your next coffee break today and let the headbanging begin. It’s in the title. Lsiten UP. RABBLE on.

MotM | Benzi & Diplo Present…Paradise Falls

My man and contributing editor BK showed me this over the weekend and I’m so glad he did. That’s the beauty of tagging along with us, we share, and share, and share.

Mansions on the Moon is the latest project from Lane Shaw and Ben Hazlegrove (of Pnuma Trio) along with singer/songwriter, Ted Wendler. The group formed a little over a year ago, developing their signature sound at studios in Atlanta and Virginia Beach and have since collaborated with N*E*R*D, Diplo, DJ Benzi and Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones.  Some of the tracks are remixes, re-edits, and adaptations of other works from the likes of Deadmau5, Junior Boys, and Washed Out.  That being said, they all showcase different dynamics of the Mansion on the Moon crew and their musical capabilities.  The future looks bright UP THERE. Don’t it? Download the full album here, it’s free!

Moombah Ya Feet | Diplo + Dillon Francis

Since the electronic music scene has so graciously infused itself into American rave culture many new artists have emerged along with new stylistics in the composition of beats that have your body doing things even you didn’t know you could do. As the shuffling continues the variety of electronic genres seems to keep growing whether its Diplo releasing a new beat for Lil Wayne to rhyme on, Steve Aoki mixing so crazily that he convinces his fans to participate in the wall of death, or simply some melodic dubstep beats spun by Mimosa to get the creative thoughts flowin. As I have filtered through various artist attempts at toying with new beats, one has finally hit home, MOOMBAHTON. In layman’s terms this music style takes normal bpm tracks and slows them to give a reggaeton-like rhythm which has everyone and their uncle giggin within the first drop. There have been two standout artists that have taken this genre by the pigtails and whipped it into a revolution when playing sets in front of live audiences, Diplo and Dillon Francis. Both signed to Mad Decent Records the two have been pushin out new Moombahton mixes and tracks non-stop releasing them for fans to download free, I believe this new genre approach will have a big influence on the next Major Lazer album so be on the lookout for some beats that will make you Moombah your ass. Also Mad Decent is doing big things this summer hosting a FREE concert in 4 different locations in the US including one most conviently located in Los Angeles, all you have to do is reserve a spot by RSVP and you’re into the 2011 Block Party to enjoy food, games, and slappin beats. Remember, as our minds and souls continue to float UP THERE remember there will always be new dirty beats to get down to.
