Downtempo | Chilled, Not Stirred

The genre of Downtempo has been spreading like wildfire since it picked up speed in the early 1990′s. This mixture of soul jazz, electronic beats, and ambient techniques gives listeners a sense of calmness with a spark of tempo. Glitch hop or groove music are frequently used terms for this unique sounding collective, but the genre is sure to grow ever more. The Up There crew has been on a tempo kick for quite some time now, and I think it is only appropriate that we share with all of you!

Rockin the Y∆CHT!

When was the last time that you challenged high technology? Well it’s what you’ll get if you board this Y∆CHT which is actually an acronym standing for Young Americans Challenging Higher Technology  (an alternative education program in Oregon). Back in 2002 Jona Bechtolt began experimenting and testing the limits of physical communication, music, and performance using new means of technology. Continue Reading →

A Different Kind Of Fix | Bombay Bicycle Club

London-based alternative rock band, Bombay Bicycle Club, was once claimed by NME Magazine to be ”…the hottest band to come from North London for quite some time.” After much research, this blog was able to determine that this would place the band in context with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Coldplay. While this is a mildly bold claim, there is certainly some weight in this statement. The group offers a unique folk rock sound that is appealing not only to those devote fans of Mumford & Sons, but also the abounding fans that enjoy the feel good rock explosion of the last few years, including groups like Phoenix, Matt & Kim, and Two Door Cinema Club. Currently the band is touring Europe and is scheduled to make a few North American appearances come later summer. They are set to release their new album A Different Kind Of Fix [PREORDER] come August 29. It’s a sunny day here in The City, and this track from their upcoming album couldn’t fit the mood more. Go outside. Listen UP. RABBLE on.

Utopia | YACHT | Classixx

In a couple of weeks the self-proclaimed “Sci-Fi” band YACHT brings us their fifth album Shangri-La, a ballad of songs romantically placed together to tell a science-fiction story of a Utopia that diverges from “a horror of our crumbling, radiation-leaking, bomb-launching reality.” Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans of Marfa, Texas and Portland, Oregon invite everyone to join them this summer in their Utopia they call Shangri-La. However, before you make any assumptions the duo exclaims “YACHT IS NOT A CULT,” but rather a band, business, and belief system. Regardless of where this duo fits into the societal order they continue to bring us dance rock that transforms any sucker into a bobble head. Enjoy the second track from their upcoming album, a response to last year’s oil spill. Oh and we figured we might as well throw in a remix of an older YACHT track remixed by this music blog’s beloved Classixx. Listen UP. RABBLE on.

Breaking Down the Bells | Broken Bells

Broken Bells is the collaborative duo of Brian Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse and James Mercer a.k.a front man from The Shins. Although this group only took off in October of 2009 they are doing incredible things. Full of mellow, catchy vocals, the group’s sound is simplistic and bare-boned, using only the essentials to make you keep these songs on repeat. The style is definitely unique – like a unicorn getting struck by lighting while walking on the water. Checkout their self-titled indie rocking, electronic vibrations album here, it’s is a good one. They are touring all over this summer starting on the West coast right now. It’s too late to change your mind, you let lost be your guide.
